Matchplay does funny things to your golf. Â The dynamics of a match shape mood, conversation and â?? in Michaelâ??s case â?? probably the rest of his day. Â Poor Michael 3 putted the last from 15 feet to halve the match. Â The hole before he hit what appeared to be a solid drive (on a driveable par 4), but the ball was lost. Â An almighty choke, to use his words. Â For me there is of course the relief at having got out of jail, and having retained the privilege to wear my shoes until tomorrow morning (see this weekâ??s punishment, detailed in yesterdayâ??s blog). Â Phew. Â I myself had two 3 putts today, in 9 holes, and so can relate to his anguish to a certain extent.
The idiosyncracies of matchplay golf aside, we had a wonderful morning. Â The 9 holes at Titahi Bay Golf Club â?? todayâ??s venue â?? sit atop a peninsula overlooking Porirua, around 20 minutes from Wellington. Â We were told the views on a clear day are spectactular, and you can see right down to the South Island. Â This morning the clouds hung low, although a few rays shone through intermittently. Â Crucially the wind didnâ??t play a part (it usually would). Â Itâ??s a short course, and several of the par 4s are driveable (I hit it on 1 of them, and over the back of another; Mike hit it over the back of all 3 â?? no control...)
Post-golf we missioned into town, to catch up with friends over a few famously good Wellington coffees. Â I forgot in 3 weeks how good it (Wellington coffee) was â?? particularly at Mojo ( http://www.mojocoffee.co.nz/), of which there are a few in these parts. Â Coffee goes with Wellington like a pint goes with a curry. Â So Iâ??ve had a few; when in Rome, as they say... (Read: the preceding 300 words were typed in 8 seconds flat).
I can feel the effects of my last doppio wearing off now, so will retire to base camp to write a few letters. Â This time tomorrow weâ??ll be out at Clearwater, enjoying watching how the real golfers play. Â Maybe see some of you out there...
Peace, JP
P.S. We're throwing around a few ideas about how to structure the blog going forward (if at all) - i.e. whether to split it into sections (say, for example, "The haggle", "The course", "Our playing partners", "The region"). Â We'll also be putting up a standalone stats page, to cater for you numbers nuts out there. Â Welcome any thoughts/comments/feedback.

Jamie - Mum forwarded me a link to your site today after telling me about puregolf2010. Sitting at my desk in London today (with the snow falling!) it was a welcome break to read what you've been up to. Sounds like quite a challenge ahead - lots of luck to you both.. Matthew and I live about 30 mins north west of London now - if you are heading this way you would be very welcome to stay with us. Goodluck! Kate Duncan (kduncan7@doctors.org.uk)

I reckon you guys should pump the videos and pictures, with the daily blog entries, get the narratives going, and the antics in the videos, and it doesnt need to be professionally cut even! Cheap and crude i reckon. Keep it up, all the best for the launch, wished I could be there!
