Thunder on the mountain at Cleeve Hill. A guest blog by Nick "Pom" Anderson

Morning all.  England renowned for its consistent climate did not disappoint again, as we were woken by rain pounding on the window and winds that enchanted us by the high pitch velocity apparent as they thrust past the window.  Our 8am tee time was at the most unique course, Cleeve Hill Golf Club.  The course, only 10 metres or short of "mountain" classification (that's big news in England...), projected the highest point in the world famous Cotswolds.  Offering views of, on a clear day (no such thing), 100 miles into Wales and the surrounding areas.  Myself and my two Kiwi guests hit this upland links style course, while puregolf2010's newly acquired manager, Doug, continued to ??light candles? over a Full English and a Stowford in the comfort of the 19th.  We believe, entertained by the members; in true Cleeve fashion.  Lazy sod.

The first hole set the standard for the first eight.  45 mile per hour winds and sheets of rain, the majority of holes driving 180 yards into a head hurricane.  Par 4s became Par 5s and Par 5s became Par 6s.  Challenging doesn't quite cover it!  The fourth providing the most entertainment as remaining still over the ball proved impossible, with Michael hitting a slight cut?into Wales.  With the hole complete, Michael still had not hit his second shot and walked rather tentatively to the green explaining he had lost two of his wedges.  Luckily for him they had wound up in my bag, as he discovered on the 7th!  Having played eight, we played the 17th in order to have our picture taken for a few minutes of fame in the local rag.  It's fair to say the boys weren't looking their best...

It was here that the owner, Hugh, joined us to make a fourball and the weather finally cleared up.  The scoring improved, the holes got shorter and Hugh, knowing every inch of his course, showed us the way to go.  A real gentleman he was too.  There were some magnificent holes, but none better than the Par 5 13th.  The open tee shot up hill into the wind was not too inspiring, followed by the blind second shot over the hill.  Yet as we followed our 2nd shot over the hill we were graced what the Cotswolds are all about.  Breathtaking views of the rolling terrain, Malvern Hills and in the distance a glimpse of the mountains in Wales.  Not to mention the World Famous Cheltenham Race Course.  The third shot downhill to a green that was formerly a Roman Fort.  Built down into the Fort Hill you could see the Moat that once surrounded this wonderful landmark.  We were greeted on the 18th green by a thirst quenching local Cider from the Club Captain, Jeff, Strongbow Vince, Gordy ("The Poison Dwarf", to his friends), Tim and the VC whose name has left my forgetful brain.  After a homely Sunday Roast dinner, we were given a show from the members demonstrating their passion for the club, their humour and ability to greet new people, showing us a pretty epic time indeed.  Unbelieve hospitality, really.

With Rain affecting Celtic Manor we caught the last few holes...  Then Michael caught up with some sleep while Doug, JP and I headed out to watch Chelsea FC play in a local public house.  With our final evening in Cheltenham upon us, we were fortunate enough to experience a local band called ??Duke??.  They actually played at Wayne Rooney??s wedding.  Consisting of three members, their music was a combination of singing, the guitar and beat boxing.  Truly awesome to see.  Another early finish before an exciting finale to the Ryder Cup on Monday.  Et voila.
